How do children learn best?

Children learn best when they feel happy, secure and comfortable. They learn when they are given encouragement and know it's OK to make mistakes. Children need to be encouraged to enjoy their successes too.

Kindergarten uses play to teach children many educational skills. In play it is safe to try new things, and through practice develop skills and confidence. Play supports children to develop concentration and perseverance - we focus best at tasks we enjoy and are interested in.

No one else can have experiences or construct knowledge for a child. Children must do this themselves through play, play and more play.

Play is pleasurable, spontaneous, creative and unpredictable. Sometimes noisy or quiet, messy or orderly, silly or serious, strenuous or effortless - children find play satisfying, challenging, enjoyable and rewarding.

Children learn to play together as well as work alone. They learn to share and cooperate, develop independence and learn that it's all right to ask for help.

Play is used as a tool to teach the children the skills they need for school and beyond - and to discover that learning is fun!
